Bruce was recruited by every Ivy League school as well as dozens of top universities due to his athletic and academic prowess in high school.  Yet it was in a recruiting visit from Coach Joe Paterno, Penn State, that he made the decision to play football for the Nittany Lions.  Coach Joe told him, “Son, I don’t know if you’ll ever play football on our field, but I will guarantee you that we’ll give you a good education and degree at Penn State”.

He graduated with a degree in metallurgy/geology and went on to become a first team, All-American on the football field and graduated 2nd in his class at Penn State.  From 1969-73, Bruce participated in the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Hula Bowl and was selected defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl.  He also played against the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins in the exhibition game that featured the all-american’s against the reigning Super Bowl champions.  He had just been drafted by the NY Jets in the 5th round but Miami bought his contract because they so impressed with his play against them.

He was selected NFL defensive player of the week in 1973 and Special Teams Player of the Year as well as earning a Super Bowl ring.

Bruce is now living near the Scottsdale Princess and TPC golf course and serves on the NFL Alumni Players Committee.  He is actively assisting the SAE Phoenix Alumni in getting SAE players from the NFL to attend our February Super Bowl & Phoenix Open reception.
